Biography:
Jeannie Mills Pwerle, born on 15 May 1965 in the Atnwengerrp region of the Northern Territory, is a celebrated Alyawarre artist from Utopia. She grew up surrounded by art and culture, with creativity running strongly in her family. Her Mother, Dolly Mills, is a well known painter and her late Uncle, Greeny Purvis Petyarre was widely respected for his contributions to Utopian art.
Jeannie's artistic practice centres on the Anaty (Bush Yam or Bush Potato) Dreaming, a story from her Fathers' Country. Bold, layered brush strokes in radiant hues and fine dotwork symbolise the Yam Seed. Her palette shifts between earthy Ochres and dramatic pinks and purples.
Her talent was recognised in 2008 when she was selected as a finalist in the 25th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Art Awards.
